Quick answer: Strike rate is runs per 100 balls. Batting average is runs per dismissal. Economy rate is runs conceded per over. Strike Rate: Runs Per 100 Balls

Batting strike rate is simply (runs ÷ balls faced) × 100. A batter who scores 45 from 30 balls has a strike rate of 150 — meaning that at that tempo they would score 150 from 100 balls.

In Twenty20 cricket this is usually the headline number, because balls are the scarce resource. An innings only has 120 of them, so a batter who consumes deliveries slowly is costing the team even while their own runs column looks healthy.

Batting Average: Runs Per Dismissal

Batting average is runs ÷ times dismissed, and not-outs are excluded from the denominator. That exclusion is why finishers often carry averages that look inflated: a batter who comes in at over 17 and finishes unbeaten repeatedly accumulates runs without accumulating dismissals.

In Test cricket the average is close to a complete answer. In T20 it is one input among several, because surviving is not the point — scoring quickly enough to matter is.

Phase Matters More Than the Total

A T20 innings has three distinct phases, and the same raw number means completely different things in each.

  • Powerplay (overs 1–6). Fielding restrictions apply. A strike rate of 140 here against the new ball is genuinely aggressive.
  • Middle overs (7–15). Spin, deeper fields, fewer boundary options. A strike rate of 130 in this phase is often more valuable than 160 at the death.
  • Death overs (16–20). Everybody's strike rate rises. A big number here is expected, not exceptional.

So when a graphic shows "strike rate 178", the first question is where. A phase split is available on any decent statistics site and turns a flashy number into a real one.

Bowling: Economy, Average and Strike Rate

  • Economy rate = runs conceded ÷ overs bowled. In T20 this is the primary bowling number, because containing runs is usually the job.
  • Bowling average = runs conceded ÷ wickets taken. Lower is better, and it rewards wicket-takers over pure containers.
  • Bowling strike rate = balls bowled ÷ wickets taken. This is about how quickly a bowler breaks partnerships.

A death-overs specialist will almost always have a worse economy than a powerplay bowler, and that is not a fault — they are bowling in the hardest phase by design. Comparing them directly without adjusting for phase is the most common analytical error fans make.

What "Impact" Actually Tries to Measure

"Impact" is not one standard statistic. It is a family of models that try to answer a better question than the raw numbers do: how much did this performance change the probable outcome of the match? A 25 from 12 balls in a tight chase can shift a match more than an 80 in a game already decided.

Because different publishers use different models, impact numbers are not comparable across sources. Treat them as a useful lens, not a verdict, and always look at who calculated them and how.

Sample Size: The Trap in Every Viral Stat

This is the single most important idea on the page. In a small number of innings, ordinary variation produces extraordinary-looking numbers. A batter with eight innings can show a strike rate no career sustains — not because they are a fraud, but because eight innings cannot tell you much about anyone.

The rule of thumb: before reacting to any batting statistic, look at the innings count. Before reacting to a bowling statistic, look at the overs.
